Do You Have A Power Pitch?

By February 25, 2015 Business No Comments

I recall one of my most disastrous moments that came at the beginning of my career. I was in an interview for an entry-level position at CNN…and I was nervous. My nervousness came from being ill prepared, not knowing what I was going to say and thinking I could just “wing it”. I was wrong. I was asked a few questions including:

What makes me different than any other candidate?

I was so nervous I bumbled my way through. I think I actually said, “I’m nice”. (Cringe) I am truly surprised I wasn’t ushered to the door right at that moment. Needless to say, I was not hired.

I returned confidently a few years later and interviewed again. This time I was hired. What was different? I was. I knew exactly who I was, what I could offer, why CNN should work with me and most importantly…I asked for the job. I gave them my Power Pitch. A Power Pitch is 30 seconds of information that make you irresistible to your target audience. It’s your personal live commercial. It’s your moment to shine.

A Power Pitch has four components:

Who You Are
Make sure you explain exactly who you are right up front. Grab their attention with your first line. What’s your biggest selling point? Are you a graduate of a prestigious school? A top manager at a competitor? A Vice President looking to move up? My current Power Pitch begins this way:

Hi, I’m Amanda Herr. It’s great to meet you. As the Owner of Herr Company and a Certified Professional Coach I love meeting new people.

What You Do
Follow up with what you do. For instance, it’s great that you are the youngest manager in your department, however, why do I care? What does that mean for me? For example, my Pitch continues:

I work with clients looking to define their success on their own terms and then reach the goals they set. I help them be a leader in their life, in essence to become their success.

Why They Should Work with You
At this point they are learning more about you, but what can you do for them? Remember…in their world, it’s about them and not you. Always use words like “you” rather than “ they” or “client”…it makes the Power Pitch personal. I continue:

My Lead, Follow or Get Me Out of My Way program helps you increase your motivation, your confidence and your work/life balance in just a few short sessions.

The Ask
Always end your Power Pitch with an ask. Make the Pitch matter. Get more time to sell them on you or your service. You need more time to create the relationship that will translate into your success. Your Power Pitch should be so powerful you get the time you need.

I’d love to tell you more about it. I know this program will be a benefit to you and your team. Do you have time now or can I get on your calendar this week?

You may be thinking it feels weird to first meet someone and give them your Power Pitch…and you would be right. Should you memorize your Power Pitch? Yes. Should you recite it like a robot? NO.

Memorizing the Power Pitch is important. It solidifies the important facts that you want to convey. Practice your Pitch in the mirror and watch your facial expressions. Listen to your inflection and rhythm. Practice it on friends, co-workers and loved one’s. If you dedicate yourself to doing that, when The Power Pitch comes into play (an interview, a chance meeting…) you will be ready. You will comfortably, and with confidence, tell your target audience: who you are, what you do, why they should work with you and to ASK for what you want…and what you deserve.
